The Giants used their first-round pick (No. 24 overall) to get one of the best cornerbacks in the class in Deonte Banks. New York followed that up on Day 2 by getting terrific value in John Michael Schmitz in Round 2 and then WR Jalin Hyatt in the third round.
The Giants still need to work out an extension with running back Saquon Barkley, but it was a solid job by New York’s front office throughout the event.
Who did the Giants Draft in 2023?
Banks was born to play in Wink Martindale’s aggressive, man-heavy defense. He’s a physical cornerback who loves to get his hands on receivers at the line of scrimmage and demoralize them. He’s also quite physical against the run.
Schmitz was a fantastic value toward the end of the second round. The Giants needed to add a starting-caliber center more than fish need gills to survive underwater, and Schmitz was arguably the best center in the 2023 NFL Draft class.

They got value again in the third round when they drafted Hyatt. Although his undersized frame is a bit redundant on the Giants’ roster full of small receivers, his outrageous speed will serve the Giants’ offense well.
Eric Gray has a legitimate chance to produce early as someone who spells Barkley if he signs the tag, and he may be thrust into a starting role if Barkley doesn’t.
The Giants will likely hope to find a little depth on defense from their final three draft selections. However, Owens was liked by many in the media throughout the process, although his fit with Martindale will be interesting, given he’s probably better-suited as a zone coverage defender.
