Baltimore Ravens Season Preview: Projected Depth Chart, Rosters, and Predictions

The 2023 NFL season is rapidly approaching for the league that never sleeps. The NFL Draft is over, and minicamps have already begun. Now’s the time to examine the new players who have joined the roster, project who will make the team, look ahead to fierce training camp battles, and project ahead for how the season will play out. Here’s everything you need to know in this Baltimore Ravens preview.

Everything You Need Ahead of the Baltimore Ravens 2023 NFL Season

The Ravens took care of the most important roster move facing them ahead of the 2023 season: bringing back Lamar Jackson. Ensuring that he is the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future was paramount to Baltimore’s 2023 success.

The main question is, did they do enough around him to take the necessary steps forward to regain the high ground in the AFC North?

Ravens Roster Changes

  • Players Signed/Claimed
    • CB Rock Ya-Sin
    • WR Odell Beckham Jr.
    • WR Nelson Agholor

The Ravens haven’t added many new faces in free agency, but there is no doubt what the emphasis was. The additions of two wide receivers, each with extensive starting experience, demonstrate Baltimore’s commitment to Jackson’s success. After years of not being able to get returns on their WR investments, the Ravens hope adding two veterans will change that.

  • Players Drafted
    • WR Zay Flowers
    • LB Trenton Simpson
    • EDGE Tavius Robinson
    • CB Kyu Blu Kelly, CB, Stanford
    • OT Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu
    • G Andrew Vorhees

Again, investing in wide receiver was the common theme for the Ravens. Their first-round pick was spent on Zay Jones out of Boston College, boasting significant talent upgrades throughout Baltimore’s entire WR room.

The rest of the meat of the 2023 NFL Draft for the Ravens was spent on defense. Baltimore had an elite unit in being able to prevent their opponents from scoring efficiently, making them grind for every point. They added to a strength with players like Trenton Simpson and Tavius Robinson.

  • Players Cut
    • DE Calais Campbell
  • Players Whose Contracts Have Expired
    • OLB Vince Biegel
    • RB Kenyan Drake
    • RB Kyle Fuller
    • OLB Justin Houston
    • OT Ja’Wuan James
    • OLB Steven Means
    • CB Marcus Peters
    • OLB Jason Pierre-Paul
    • WR Demarcus Robinson
    • WR Sammy Watkins

Peters, Houston, and Drake were all key contributors in Baltimore in the last few years. As of now, the Ravens don’t seem keen on re-signing any of them. Houston probably has the best chance to return, as he was quite productive last year and would be a fit as a rotational pass rusher.

  • Players Lost via Trade
    • Chuck Clark (New York Jets)

Todd Monken takes over, and a dramatic makeover is expected with more spread concepts and high-volume passing.

2022 Results and Standings

The Ravens in 2022 overcame yet another late-season injury to Jackson to make the postseason and finish second in the division standings with a 10-7 record. They would go on to lose to the Bengals in a close, low-scoring affair that was decided on a defensive touchdown from the Bengals’ Sam Hubbard.

It stands to reason that had Jackson been available, the outcome may have been different.

2023 Power Ranking and Season Outlook

According to Dalton Miller’s post-draft Power Rankings, the Ravens sit in Tier 2 at No. 10 overall as a potential playoff team. With Jackson’s re-signing and a revamped wide receiver room, expectations are high. But can Jackson stay healthy throughout Baltimore’s potential playoff push?

Miller says the following about Baltimore: “Speaking of momentum, things looked ugly in Baltimore for a long time. However, just before the NFL Draft kicked off, they announced a deal with Lamar Jackson, who now will make more money than any other QB per season in NFL history. He also secured the second-highest practical guaranteed total in league history, behind only Watson.

“A healthy and motivated Lamar Jackson is still arguably the most dangerous player on any given football field, and the assets they’ve spent trying to address their offensive firepower gives us hope that Baltimore can rebound in 2023.”
