The 2023 NFL free agency period had several big names come off the board in the opening days and other impact players following in the ensuing weeks. Yet, a sizable number of talented guys remain unsigned. Who is the best of the 2023 NFL free agents at each position?

Teams won’t be finding the future of the quarterback position in free agency in the middle of summer, but that doesn’t mean there’s no offensive talent overall. There are a few pass catchers that could make legitimate differences to their potential teams. There are also a few interior offensive linemen available that could start in the NFL today.

Quarterbacks

A couple months ago, it appeared the two biggest QB movers of free agency would be disgruntled franchise quarterbacks seeking a new home — one more for financial reasons, and the other more for . . . well, to win another Super Bowl before retiring.

Now, both are signed, and the remaining QB free agents are less than inspiring.

1) Carson Wentz
2) Matt Ryan
3) Teddy Bridgewater
4) Joe Flacco

Wide Receivers

If we were looking at this list a half-decade ago we’d need to consider a new set of denim trousers. A few names remaining can still produce as a third or fourth option in an offense. And the name at the very top is still one of the league’s top talents.

1) DeAndre Hopkins
2) T.Y. Hilton
3) Jarvis Landry
4) Kenny Golladay
5) Julio Jones

Running Backs

Dalvin Cook’s availability changes the RB landscape in free agency. But with how things have gone at the position this summer, it’s not likely that a team gives him too much money. Each running back remaining is an established veteran that won’t need to go to summer workouts to be productive in season behind a decent offensive line.

1) Dalvin Cook
2) Kareem Hunt
3) Ezekiel Elliott
4) Leonard Fournette
5) Kenyan Drake

Tight Ends

The names at tight end are bleak. Some have struggled to stay healthy over the past few seasons, while others are simply blocking tight ends that won’t get a massive amount of play on the field and certainly won’t show up on the stat sheet.

Those who are pass catchers are seeking a backup role — or perhaps as an emergency starter role if a No. 1 goes down this summer or early this season. Keep an eye on Sal Cannella, who’s played well these past 12 months in the XFL and USFL. He might get a shot as a No. 2 somewhere.

1) Maxx Williams
2) Adam Shaheen
3) Richard Rogers
4) MyCole Pruitt
5) Sal Cannella

Offensive Line

You won’t find a blindside blocker on the list. However, there are more than a few interior offensive linemen who could start. It’s curious to see Dalton Risner remain on this list. At 27, he’s shown the ability to start at guard in this league, and it’s surprising to see him remain available.

1) Ben Jones
2) Dalton Risner
3) Rodney Hudson
4) Rodger Saffold
5) Austin Blythe

2023 NFL Free Agents by Position | Defense

Outside of some uncertainty in terms of pass rushers, there was some real game-wrecking talent available at all three defensive levels at the start of free agency. But like locusts in a cornfield, the top stalks have been picked. Nevertheless, several of these players can make immediate contributions in the right situation.

Defensive Line

Much like the offensive line, the defensive line enjoyed star power at the beginning of free agency, headlined by Javon Hargrave.

But exactly like the offensive side of the ball, there are quite a few elder statesmen who could provide some nice snaps on the DL for a competitive team.

1) Shelby Harris
2) Akiem Hicks
3) Linval Joseph
3) Ndamukong Suh
5) Michael Brockers

EDGE

After the 2022 season, the EDGE position looked like the weakest free agent class on defense. Now that a host of big contracts have been signed, the NFL is left with a collection of “can they still produce?” players with solid track records but question marks surrounding their ability to thrive.

1) Jadeveon Clowney
2) Yannick Ngakoue
3) Robert Quinn
4) Markus Golden
5) Al-Quadin Muhammad

Linebackers

The LB position in free agency is one of the names of years past. Many of these names would have been exciting to see a half-decade ago but are underwhelming rotational pieces at best by this point in their career.

1) Zach Cunningham
2) Damien Wilson
3) Myles Jack
4) Deion Jones
5) Kwon Alexander

Defensive Backs

Much like wide receiver, there’s a chance a few of the names in the defensive backfield can still contribute to a rotation. A few of them could even be outstanding playmakers if the stars align in their new scheme.

1) Ronald Darby
2) William Jackson III
3) Marcus Peters
4) Troy Hill
5) Casey Hayward
