Aaron Rodgers’ Contract Details, Salary Cap Impact, Bonuses, and Net Worth

The last two seasons have been dominated by Aaron Rodgers and his future. Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets, having signed a monster contract the previous offseason with the Green Bay Packers. Let’s take a look at the latest on Rodgers’ contract and what it all means.

Update: Aaron Rodgers has been traded to the New York Jets. We will update the specifics of his contract once they are fully reported.

Aaron Rodgers’ Contract Details and Bonuses

Ahead of the 2022 NFL season, Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers agreed to terms on a three-year, $150.815 million contract extension. The three-year extension began in 2022, with two further option years. If both options are picked up, Rodgers would be under contract until 2026.

The extension was a complicated one, containing a $40.8 million signing bonus as part of $101.515 million in full guarantees. The fully guaranteed part of the deal included Rodgers’ salary in 2022 and 2023, his signing bonus, and an option bonus worth $58.3 million in 2023. The 2023 option bonus adds the 2025 year to the deal. That option must be exercised between March 17, 2023, and Week 1 of the 2023 season.

There is then another option bonus in 2024 that is worth $47 million and exercises the final year of the contract in 2026. That becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2024 waiver period. It is also guaranteed for injury as of the day the contract was signed.

Rodgers’ and the Packers renegotiated the contract ahead of his trade to the Jets. They converted the $58.8 million option bonus to base salary in 2024. That leaves Rodgers earning just $1.165 million in base salary this year, and it is all he will count against the Jets’ cap.

Meanwhile, Rodgers currently has a $107.55 million salary number next year. Therefore, we can expect to see the Jets’ renegotiate the deal with Rodgers at some point between now and next March. Largely, that makes the rest of the contract Rodgers signed with the Packers somewhat irrelevant because the Jets will likely start from scratch.

Of course, Rodgers does have all the leverage over the Jets because they will be desperate to avoid having him count for over $100 million against the cap next year. It will be fascinating to see how that situation plays out in the coming months.

What Salary Cap Implications Does Rodgers Leave in Green Bay?

With Rodgers being traded before June 1 of the 2023 season, all remaining prorated money from his contract accelerates onto the cap in 2023. Therefore, Rodgers will leave behind a dead money number of $40.314 million with the Packers.

Rodgers’ Net Worth

Depending on the source you look at, Rodgers’ reported net worth varies from around $120 million to over $200 million.

Over the course of his career so far, Rodgers has reportedly earned a total of $305.608 million. If Rodgers simply plays out the remainder of this contract, he will have earned over $450 million in cash.

These contract values do not include any off-the-field endorsements that Rodgers has had during his career. The value of all these endorsements is not publicly reported making Rodgers’ net worth nothing more than an estimate at this stage.
