Coming to the end of his third season in the NFL, Jalen Hurts’ contract will be a focus of much attention over the coming months. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, what are Hurts’ salary cap numbers, when does he become eligible for an extension, and what might the market value of that deal look like?
Update: Per Tom Pelissero, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles have agreed to a five-year extension worth $255 million. The base value of the contract is worth $51 million a year, and there is $179.304 in guaranteed money, of which $110 million is fully guaranteed at signing, including a $23.94 million signing bonus.
Jalen Hurts’ Contract Details
Having been selected 53rd overall as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts’ contract was originally a four-year deal worth $6.025 million. As part of that contract, Hurts received a $1.942 million signing bonus and $2.826 million in guaranteed money. Those guarantees covered the 2021 base salary and the signing bonus.
However, Hurts has hit the threshold to have his contract increased by a “Proven Performance Bonus (PPE).” The 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement outlines the PPE thresholds. The three levels are as follows:
- Second-round picks must play either an average of 60% of the offensive or defensive snaps over their first three years or hit that benchmark in two of their first three seasons.
- Players must participate in at least 55% of the offensive or defensive snaps in each of their first three seasons.
- A player is selected for the Pro Bowl on the original ballot in any one of the first three seasons.
Hurts had qualified for a Level 1 PPE before being selected to the Pro Bowl in the 2022 season, which qualified him for a Level 3 PPE. Therefore, Hurts’ base salary for the 2023 NFL season is the equivalent of the second-round restricted free agent tender. For this season, that is set at $4.303 million. That puts Hurts’ cap number for 2023 at $4.888 million, which breaks down as follows.

Despite the PPE, Hurts is currently set to have just the 28th-highest cap number for the QB position in the 2023 season.
When Is Hurts Eligible for an Extension?
NFL players on their rookie contracts are eligible for an extension once they have completed three years in the league. That means Hurts is eligible for an extension this offseason. What is increasing the urgency of that extension for Philly? After being a second-round selection, Hurts is not eligible for a fifth-round option. Therefore, he could hit free agency after the 2023 season.

Coming out of the 2022 NFL season, Spotrac currently projects Hurts’ market value as being worth a six-year contract at $44.2 million per year. Their comparable contract includes those handed out to Kyler Murray, Josh Allen, Deshaun Watson, and Dak Prescott. Hurts’ stats over the last two seasons compare favorably to those players over a similar time frame before they got their contracts.
